The Windows UAC user control cause this error. After booting back to Windows, a chkdsk would be needed too. When I want to do more changes like changing partition type, I'll use a Linux live image and its tool Gparted for resizing and changing type if wanted. Don't know which size Windows will offer afterwards as minimum. So even with 0% fragmentation, requesting defragmentation nevertheless will do some work. So it's not only for deleting.Ġ% fragmentation doesn't mean it is not fragmented.

Can't remember since which version Windows supports it, but Windows 10 surely does. Older versions of Windows couldn't shrink a file system or partition, only 3rd party tools were able to do so. Also, in Windows, can't you only shrink the partition if it's the last partition or something, or is that only for deleting partitions?Īlso, I thought maybe it needed defragged but it says it's 0% fragmented. I tried to use Windows to shrink it, but the most it said it could shrink it to was only 949GB, which is still ridiculously huge, since actual used space is only 48.5GB. So by doing this, I assume the Samsung Migration app is not detecting the hdd as a system OS drive, since the flag would not be set when the drive is used in this fashion. Windows disk manager doesn't allow such operations, proposing shrinking only to a size without such side-effects. Don't know the effect if shrinking puts file segments beyond the new size. chkdsk is the command to try repairing certain kind of such inconsistencies. Shrinking of a file system should lead to inconsistencies. So did you follow the advice in the error message and performed a chkdsk operation? Did that error message persist even after such an operation? I did resize it in Macrium as I mentioned in my post, but it still fails with the error message I mentioned

Don't know how to declare a disk as slave in SATA. I know such a term only back in history in times of (P)ATA disks.
Is it because I'm using it as a slave on my desktop PC? The drive still works fine in the laptop, so do I really need to run chkdsk on it or is this error likely caused by something else? Since the laptop only has the slower USB 2, I am using my Windows 7 desktop PC to perform the clone. The 2TB hdd only has 45.59GB of used space, so I have plenty of room to spare for the ssd. I'm wanting to replace my Windows 10 2TB hdd with a 250GB ssd in my Dell laptop Inspiron 15-3567.
